If you’ve ever longed for a quiet escape in the heart of nature, far from the bustle of daily
life, then a stay at Cwm-yr-Hendy, a remote Welsh lodge nestled in the hills of Mid Wales,
might be just what you need.

Cwm-yr-Hendy offered me the perfect setting for my first ever solo travel experience – just
me and my dog, Toffee. Surrounded by peaceful countryside and wildlife, it was the ideal
base for a relaxing, dog-friendly holiday, with plenty of locations nearby for us to explore
and adventure. The main purpose of our trip – reconnecting with nature.
Following our super friendly welcome from Isobel who showed us how to use the hot tub
and shared some local hotspots to check out – we were left completely at peace during our
stay but knowing that Isobel was just a phone call away if I needed anything.
Cosy evenings and quiet mornings
The lodge itself is wonderfully cosy and well thought out, with big comfy sofas, access to a
fully enclosed garden which Toffee loved and a hot tub with views across the hills. The lodge
has 3 bedrooms, two great sized doubles and a twin. I’d not slept so well in ages – that
mattress…bliss! It’s fully equipped for your stay, with dishwasher, washing machine and a
great shower. It’s like going home from home – only I don’t have the benefit of a dishwasher
at home haha!

Both of us enjoyed our goodies from our welcome basket, which was a lovely touch.
The setting at Cwm-yr-Hendy provides the kind of stillness that lets you truly unwind. I
thoroughly enjoyed watching the sun rise and set each day, yet you’re close enough to local
amenities and travel routes to fill your days with adventure.
I started each morning with breakfast and a cuppa in the garden, listening to the birdsong

and enjoying the view, while Toffee ate her breakfast al-fresco too.
In the evenings, I curled up with a book, completely content, with Toffee snoozing in her
bed. It was one of the most peaceful breaks I’ve ever had.

Exploring the local area
Although it was tempting to stay curled up in the lodge and have the most amazing duvet
days, there’s so much beauty nearby that we couldn’t resist a few adventures.

On our way to Cwm-yr-Hendy, we tackled a walk up Twmpa, also known as Lord Hereford’s
Knob – a brilliant hike with panoramic views across the Black Mountains. Toffee loved the
wide-open space and we hardly saw another soul.
Following that epic hike, and on a slightly drizzly morning, we opted to visit a local treasure
with a trip to Hafren Forest a short half hour drive from Cwm-yr-Hendy, and offers stunning
woodland walks, riverside trails, and waterfalls. It’s an excellent choice for dog-friendly
walks in mid Wales, though it gets very busy so would recommend arriving early to secure a
parking spot and to enjoy the peaceful tranquillity of the forest.
On our final day, we had a lazy morning, packing up and heading off for our final adventure
to nearby Water Break It’s Neck and Warren Wood, nestled within Radnor Forest.
Other nearby must-sees are Elan Valley and visiting the bustling market towns of Rhayader,
Llandrindod Wells and Builth Wells. All spots where you can pick up the essentials for your
stay.
Why Cwm-yr-Hendy is perfect for a lodge stay in Wales
This stay reminded me how rewarding it is to slow down and enjoy the simple things: good
books, quiet mornings, fresh air, and time adventuring with my dog. If you're searching for a remote dog-friendly lodge in Wales, or considering solo travel in the UK, Cwm-yr-Hendy is the kind of place that leaves a lasting impression, and I’ll definitely look to visit again!
It provides a great base from which to explore the many treasures of Mid Wales and
beyond.
